Washington Revels -- 30th Annual CHRISTMAS REVELS

For their 30th annual celebration of the Winter Solstice, Washington Revels calls upon well-loved elements of Christmas Revels past to renew the spirit of joy that marks this time of the year. England’s Haddon Hall (the iconic setting of early productions in all Revels cities) is the perfect backdrop for the traditional and early music, dance and drama of Britain and Europe -- the same material that inspired national founder John Langstaff's very first Christmas Revels in 1957.

The story begins in 1929, as businessman John Manners, 9th Duke of Rutland, is giving his family a last look at the once-great Haddon Hall before he sells the rundown estate to build a new modern motorway. There he discovers the 'spirits'-- his ancestral Dukes and Duchesses, Earls and Countesses, and local Derbyshire country folk -- who reconvene each year to ring in the season with boisterous winter revelry. Their efforts to save their legacy (and our own!) will feature favorite Revels sing-alongs, a madcap “Twelve Days of Christmas,” new music of the season, lively country and Morris dancing, the mysterious Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, a delightful Mummer’s play with a surprise ending, and a special Revels evocation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol that will touch the heart. Our cast of over 100 musicians and actors, ages 8-80, includes treasured professional artists from the last three decades of Christmas Revels in Washington.

"Cortical Titanic" - Goldstar Discount Tix, Sat. 10/13 & Sun 10/14

Hemispheric Dysfunctionalism and the Cortical Titanic is an experimental theater piece that uses the historic voyage of the Titanic as its narrative, 100 years after the sinking of the original ship. The Titanic becomes a metaphor for humanity and its disastrous voyage illustrates the fragility of man's attempts to dominate nature and the world we live in through technology. The characters themselves, both comic and serious, present a variety of perspectives on gender roles, class distinctions, evolution, and social Darwinism as they struggle with the rapid technical progress of the industrial age. The play is complemented by original, period-inspired music.

Get $12.50 tickets for this Saturday 10/13 at 8pm or Sunday 10/14 at 2pm through Goldstar.

Fort Fringe - The Shop, 607 New York Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20001

Run-time 1 hour 20 minutes. Lobby bar opens 1 hour prior to performance and stays open for approximately 1 hour after performance. Craft beers and Prosecco on tap, wine and bottled beer, Izzy sodas.

Quotes & Highlights

"Capital Fringe with its Izzy sodas for a quarter and Prosecco on tap is the right place to try something different in terms of theatre. This show is not for anyone who’s not into experimental theatre ... but it is a truly original creation to appeal to the sort of viewer who likes Waiting for Godot or absurdist theatre in general." -- Woman Around Town

It’s high-minded, but gut-punching. And ultimately, HDATCT steams through to its proper port with force and a rolling tide of interesting ideas. No “king of the world” aboard here — just a madly creative manifest. -- DCTheatreScene.com

‎"See Hemispheric Dysfunctionalism and the Cortical Titanic. It was a wild ride. You will not be disappointed. You will not be bored. You will not be the same after seeing it." -- Opening Night Audience Member

He enjoyed dancing, singing and listening to music, and from their unique training he developed his perfect pitch. At the age of four, his family moved to the United States where he began his serious study of piano at the age of 9. His fascination for music has grown exponentially in the past few years, leading him to a rapacious study of composers and their entire works, compositional styles, study of orchestration and harmony and various forms of analysis.

Ryo is starting his senior year at McLean High School in McLean, Virginia. He is a noted young pianist in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area where he is actively involved in all aspects of performing. He has presented solo performances at George Mason University’s Performing Arts Center Young Artists Series, the Rising Star Concerts at The Alden, JoAnn Rose Gallery, and Harris Theater.

Knock On Wood Celebrates National Tap Dance Day as Studio Rises and Thrives

As the nation marks National Tap Dance Day, Knock On Wood Tap Studio, one of the few dance studios in the nation focused solely on tap, has much to celebrate. After overcoming financial challenges and opening a new studio in Takoma Park last year, KOW has grown and is thriving, offering a full roster of classes for dancers of all ages and serving as home to Capitol Tap, an ensemble troupe that performs throughout the region.

“I am elated that we have continued the tradition, introducing adults and a new generation to the joy of rhythm tap,” said Yvonne Edwards, who co-founded KOW in 1994. Affectionately known as "Ms. Yvonne," at 77 years young, she is still active in the studio and teaches classes.

Another tradition KOW continues is its Annual Showcase, which is set for June 10 at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda. Along with current students, performers will include Capitol Tap, Broadway star and current KOW instructor Baakari Wilder; Tokyo Disney’s Jason Holley and the adult ensemble Young at Heart. The program begins at 2 p.m. and is open to the public for $10, kids under 5 are free.

National Tap Dance Day, celebrated every May 25th, recognizes tap as an American art form and marks the birthday of Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. The holiday was established by Congress and signed into law in 1989.

Do you like playing chamber music with friends? Fancy listening to others make ensemble music in a relaxed setting? Want to support your local community orchestra by joining us for dinner?

Come join members of the Capital City Symphony and other local musicians for socializing, sightreading, and supper.

Professional and accomplished amateur musicians (including talented teens) are encouraged to bring their instruments, and others will be able to relax and enjoy music from a variety of composers, eras, and instrument combinations while roaming from room to room.

Includes a homemade dinner of chili (meat and veggie options), cornbread, and salad, plus homemade desserts.

Come to play, or just to listen!

$40 Full Event (musicians)
$25 Dinner Only (non-musicians)
All by $15 is tax-deductible.

This is a Fundraiser for the Capital City Symphony.
