April 20, 2014, Washington, D.C. -- The Capital City Symphony, a founding Arts Partners at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in NE Washington, D.C., is presenting a two-part American MusicFest in March and May of 2014. Part I, which was held on March 23, focused on 21st composers, including local composer Scott Pender, Jennifer Higdon of Philadelphia, and DC-native Steven Gerber, now living in New York, with guest artist Robert Spates, Violin. Part II, on May 4 at 5:00pm will include two favorite works by Samuel Barber, with guest artist local soprano Mary Gresock.

Artistic Director and Conductor Victoria Gau explains: “I find myself increasingly drawn to the incredibly rich array of new classical music being written by American composers  The idea of including music by my two friends, Scott Pender and Steven Gerber, got me started. It wasn’t hard to find the additions of Jennifer Higdon’s exquisite Blue Cathedral, and a perennial favorite, Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2.”

The May concert will feature two favorite works by Samuel Barber, Adagio for Strings and Knoxville, Summer of 1915 with Mary Gresock, soprano. The program will also include a non-American work, the popular Brahms Symphony No. 2.

ABOUT THE SOLOIST

Mary Gresock, soprano, performs extensively in concert, opera, operetta, and musical theatre throughout the Washington/Baltimore area. A versatile singing actress, Ms. Gresock’s singing voice has been described in The Washington Post as “radiant… sparkling…  and exquisite,” while her acting has been noted as “impressive… demonstrating a real gift for comedy and considerable charm.” Ms. Gresock has performed roles with Opera International, Washington National Opera, Baltimore Opera, Ashlawn-Highland Opera Festival, The IN Series of Washington, Opera Vivente, Maryland Lyric Opera, Annapolis Opera, Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia, Maryland Opera Society, Ohio Light Opera, The Washington Savoyards, Prince George’s Opera, Opera Americana, The Other Opera Company, Round House Theatre, Interact Theatre, and Signature Theatre. 

On the concert stage, Ms.Gresock recently debuted with The Trinity Chamber Orchestra in a concert celebrating works by Gilbert and Sullivan, and she was featured with The Maryland Chamber Orchestra in Saint-Saen’s Christmas Oratorio and Scarlatti’s Christmas Cantata. Unique operatic performances include the honor of creating “Castrato” and “The Judge” in the world premiere of John Musto’s Grammy nominated opera, Volpone, with The Wolf Trap Opera Company, and “Anna Gomez” in The Consul with Washington National Opera under the stage direction of the composer, Gian Carlo Menotti. Future engagements include: the world premiere a new opera entitled Lost Childhood with the National Philharmonic, Laetitia in Menotti’s original opera radio version of The Old Maid and The Thief with Odyssey Opera Theatre, featured soloist with Trinity Chamber Orchestra, and the roles of Officer’s Wife/Martha in the east coast premiere of an opera version of The Secret Garden with The Opera Theatre of Weston in Vermont.

Three contemporary composers respond to classical symphonic selections to create a continuous musical dialogue of past and present.

Four world premieres and three of your favorite symphonic movements, all woven together in a continuous concert experience!

Experience Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart in a whole new way when four contemporary works by Evan Meier, Alexandra T. Bryant and Tomek Regulski surround performances of classic symphonic movements. The composers were asked to begin their piece in the style of the classic, then move into their own musical voice, then segue into the style of the classic to follow, creating a single "Seamless Symphony." 

This world premiere concert, conceived and directed by CCS Associate Conductor John Devlin, promises to be an innovative flowing dialogue across time and musical style.

Your child (or grandchild) could be our next maestro! Put your child on the conductor's podium at a Capital City Symphony Concert and you may just unlock hidden talents or career goals. He or she will conduct one piece at the annual Family Concert on November 18, 2012.

The Capital City Symphony, in residence at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., auctions off "Junior Guest Conductor" spots each year for their popular Family Concert in November. Due to Hurricane Sandy, bidding has been extended until Sunday, November 11. 

This is a major annual fundraiser for the Capital City Symphony. An important part of our mission is encouraging young audience members. Tickets for kids (16 and under) are FREE for all CCS main season concerts. The annual Family Concert is geared specifically to kids, especially the older pre-school and elementary school set. The Junior Guest Conductor auction helps us to continue to offer these benefits for our youngest audience members.

Up to TWO winners permitted, one for each performance (2:30pm and 4:30pm).

SYMPHONY DANCE! Teen pianist to play with Capital City Symphony

Fall Concerts 2010

The Capital City Symphony fall concerts both hold special appeal for young people, as well as for adults. Every other year the Capital City Symphony features the winner of the Ylda Novik Memorial Piano Competition. This year's winner, 15-year-old pianist Sarah Barham, will be the guest artist for the October 17th concert, playing Liszt's Totentanz.

The October concert takes the idea of the dance through some twists, from Liszt's “Dance of Death” to the dead dancing on Bald Mountain, and concluding with Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, which Wagner referred to as “the apotheosis of the dance” because of its lively rhythms. The program will include Liszt, Totentanz, with pianist Sarah Barham; Mussorgsky/Rimsky-Korsakov, Night on Bald Mountain; and Beethoven, Symphony No. 7.

Each performance is preceded by an instrument petting zoo, with members of the orchestra displaying their instruments and even letting the children try them! The concert itself includes a special program book just for the younger set and lots of audience interaction.

This year's Family Concert will explore "The Case of the Missing Melody." Maestro Victoria Gau will lead the audience on a search for clues in works by Adolphe, Rossini, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky.

CCS and Charlie Barnett collaborated several years ago on Mr. Barnett's symphony “The Blue Chevrolet.” Ever since then, Mr. Barnett and CCS Artistic Director Victoria Gau have been exploring the possibility of a larger collaboration. Mr. Barnett proposed two halves to the program. First, a world premier of his new orchestral work “The Tarot.” Second, full orchestrations of his jazz arrangements for Chaise Lounge and the Capital City Symphony.

As a film composer, Mr. Barnett’s scores have appeared in more than four hundred television and theatrical films. His concert music career includes worldwide performances of his orchestral and chamber works. He has also arranged and produced pop and jazz records for countless artists; and he continues to proudly play with the eclectic lounge band, Chaise Lounge, whose second album was released in early 2009. Chaise Lounge performs a blend of music that sounds like it was recorded at Capitol Recording Studios in 1962 and somehow found its way to today’s pop charts. You might call it “Early Stereo.” Or perhaps Lounge with a capital “L.” Or maybe just plain enjoyable. It is the combination of five of the Washington area’s top jazz musicians playing sparkling arrangements of standards and original tunes and featuring the soft, luminous vocals of Marilyn Older. Her voice is truly an American Original. An evening spent with her is an evening spent in the warm, inviting glow of the one of the wonderful voices singing in America right now.

Now in its 42^nd season, the Capital City Symphony, one of the original Arts Partners at the Atlas, makes music approachable by presenting affordable concerts to the public, performing creative programs in a relaxed concert format, and providing appealing performance opportunities for talented amateur as well as professional players.

All three of these pieces have strong folk influence. The Dvorak is rooted in Native American and African American folk music, and the de Falla is strongly influenced by the gypsy folklore of Andalusia. Neither, however, quotes pre-existing music. On the other hand, the Copland borrowed at least 9 Mexican folk tunes for this work, subtitled "Popular Type Dance Hall in Mexico City."
