In the late December chill, the glow of hearth fires warms the spirits of the villagers as they prepare for the time of celebration—le temps des Fêtes! Amidst this holiday cheer, a group of young men prepares to set out after profit and adventure—to be voyageurs. They paddle a huge canoe across rivers and lakes, deep into the wild Canadian woods—but not even rugged terrain can stop them from rejoining their loved ones in time for New Year’s Eve!

This energetic Québécois winter celebration features joyous carols, toe-tapping dances, and foot-stomping instrumentals, blending old French traditions with New World ingenuity. We are excited to present the next installment in our series of Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions with Becky Linafelt as part of the WE ARE TAKOMA Series.

Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions are designed for children ages 1 1/2 to 7 and their accompanying grown-ups. These informal concerts encourage young children to become active and enthusiastic listeners through music, movement, and games.

In this session, we will explore FEELINGS. For the young child, navigating and understanding feelings can be quite a complicated task! Our feelings range from great excitement and joy to sadness and anger and all that’s in between.

Join a String Quintet from the Takoma Ensemble and Kindermusik educator, Becky Linafelt, on a musical journey through the varied landscape of FEELINGS.

Stay for snacks after the performance!

Enjoy a triple bill conceived by Associate Conductor John Devlin, the mastermind behind a series of successful, forward-thinking INTERSECTIONS classical concert experiences.

A moving song cycle for tenor, string orchestra and video, Benjamin Britten’s haunting Les Illuminations, based on the writing of Arthur Rimbaud, will feature acclaimed soloist Gran Wilson, with video design by the visionary Tim McLoraine. Experience the world premiere of Kirsten Warfield's new piece for drum set, electronics, and brass quintet. The finale will feature excerpts from pieces by Beethoven, Elgar and Rimsky-Korsakov, chosen in December via social media, accompanied by video designs.

The 2013 Christmas Revels: Echoes of Thrace (Washington, DC)

[Note from the blogger: Despite the title, this is NOT just a "Christmas" show, and definitely not a pageant! Each year, the show is set in a different place and time, ranging from Renaissance Italy to Shakespearean England to Appalachia to medieval France. Yes, there are Christmas carols (and the audience can join in on some of them), but also winter traditions -- songs, dances, and stories -- from that year's culture. There is something magical about singing with 1,000 other people, and joining hands for a giant line dance out into the lobby at intermission!

Definitely family-friendly (although it's a long show, so the under 5 set may have trouble making it all the way through), mostly matinee performance times, and lots of restaurants nearby for before or after the show.]

Washington Revels presents their 31st annual "Christmas Revels," through December 15 at Lisner Auditorium.

This year, we harken back to ancient Thrace – legendary home of Orpheus, "bringer of music," whose evocative notes open our story. His melodies scatter to the regions of Bulgaria, Greece, Thracian Turkey, and beyond, where each culture shapes them into traditions of its own. Revel with families of an imagined village where these colorful folk traditions weave together. Gather in the village square to celebrate the turning of the year!

Amid a swirl of beautiful costumes, meet iconic folk characters including giant Bulgarian masked kukeri; the Thracian "Christmas camel"; and the kallikantzari, goblins who make trouble during the 12 days of Christmas and are vanquished on Epiphany. Delight in children caroling door-to-door playing on silvery triangles and offering blessings with survakari sticks, participate in holiday customs old and new, and rejoice with a family at the birth of their child.

Celebrate with familiar Revels songs and sing-alongs, seasonal carols from Thrace and beyond, thrilling choral arrangements of ancient folk melodies, haunting Slavonic harmonies, fiery instrumentals and traditional dances, and a rollicking mummers’ play featuring folk characters from the region.

Experience Brahms, Beethoven and Mozart in a whole new way when four contemporary works by Evan Meier, Alexandra T. Bryant and Tomek Regulski surround performances of classic symphonic movements. The composers were asked to begin their piece in the style of the classic, then move into their own musical voice, then segue into the style of the classic to follow, creating a single "Seamless Symphony." 

This world premiere concert, conceived and directed by CCS Associate Conductor John Devlin, promises to be an innovative flowing dialogue across time and musical style.

For their 30th annual celebration of the Winter Solstice, Washington Revels calls upon well-loved elements of Christmas Revels past to renew the spirit of joy that marks this time of the year. England’s Haddon Hall (the iconic setting of early productions in all Revels cities) is the perfect backdrop for the traditional and early music, dance and drama of Britain and Europe -- the same material that inspired national founder John Langstaff's very first Christmas Revels in 1957.

The story begins in 1929, as businessman John Manners, 9th Duke of Rutland, is giving his family a last look at the once-great Haddon Hall before he sells the rundown estate to build a new modern motorway. There he discovers the 'spirits'-- his ancestral Dukes and Duchesses, Earls and Countesses, and local Derbyshire country folk -- who reconvene each year to ring in the season with boisterous winter revelry. Their efforts to save their legacy (and our own!) will feature favorite Revels sing-alongs, a madcap “Twelve Days of Christmas,” new music of the season, lively country and Morris dancing, the mysterious Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, a delightful Mummer’s play with a surprise ending, and a special Revels evocation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol that will touch the heart. Our cast of over 100 musicians and actors, ages 8-80, includes treasured professional artists from the last three decades of Christmas Revels in Washington.

Washington Revels' "Andalusian Treasures" is just stunning!

Washington Revels' "Andalusian Treasures" opened this past weekend, and I have to say that personally, I found it to be just stunning. I have been encouraging my friends and personal contacts to come see the show, based just on the advance publicity information. Now, however, having seen the show myself, I wanted to reach out one more time and encourage folks to COME SEE THIS SHOW!

Andalusian Treasures is a truly multi-cultural production, showcasing the Golden Age of Spain, when Jewish, Muslim, and Christian religion and culture flourished side by side. There's humor, poetry, music, dance, an adorable kids' chorus, chances for the audience to join in the singing and dancing, and just a powerful sense of community. 

I think Washington Revels achieved what they say on their website: "We celebrate the legacy of the extraordinary flowering of arts and culture that began in medieval Andalusia, and honor the symbol that it has become (however imperfect and uneven the reality) of the ideal of a greater tolerance and acceptance among different religions and cultures."

This December travel back in time more than 1000 years to al-Andalus to experience the music, dance and drama of three great cultures – Sephardic Jewish, Arabic and Iberian – in one great country as Washington Revels celebrates the art and music of this unique time.

Joined by special guest ensembles Trio Sefardi and Layali El Andalus, we’ll celebrate with poignant Sephardic and Arab-Andalusian music, lively Spanish folk dances and songs, a Hanukkah celebration, a North African “Saidi” or Tahtib cane dance reminiscent of Morris dancing, as well as traditional Revels favorites.

The Silver Spring International Middle School instrumental and choral music groups participated in the Music in the Parks competition held at Hershey Park on May 28, 2010. Music In The Parks is a national organization that provides amusement park music competitions and student music festivals for student bands, student orchestras, student choirs and other student music groups.

REVELS FESTIVAL DAY at Rachel Carson Meadow

Picnic and perform with Washington Revels in the midst of this celebration of the benefits of a neighborhood park.

We gather, rehearse, and perform a “mini-Revels” all in one day – no auditions or experience necessary! Come by yourself, with a friend, or bring the whole family – all ages welcome.

Register by MAY 10 to select your performance or production activity.

Everyone 13 and older can choose to sing in the chorus, dance English country-style, act in the Mummer’s play, play in the band, craft props and decorations, help with setup/sign-in/organization, serve as photographers/videographers, or lend a hand with schlepping/assembling large props, etc.

Children ages 6-12 may either learn and perform their own set, or work on props and decorations. A parent must accompany children ages 6-7 during activities, and parents are responsible for supervising children ages 5 and under.

We hope to be able to accommodate all who register, but space is limited, particularly for those who want to dance.

At 1:00pm, all learn 2-3 songs that everyone may sing. We then separate into activity groups to prepare. After a snack break, we review everything and put it all together. At 4:00pm, we have the Grand Procession and perform our mini-Revels.

Can’t come for the full afternoon? Then join the audience at 4:00pm, when we share our performance with local residents at the Rachel Carson Meadow Festival.

Capital City Symphony - FAMILY CONCERT 11/22/09

The Capital City Symphony is once again offering two performances of its popular Family Concert, at 2:30pm and 4:30pm at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in NE DC.

Each performance is preceded by an instrument petting zoo (at 2pm & 4pm), with members of the orchestra displaying their instruments and even letting the children try them!

The concert itself includes a special program book just for the younger set and lots of audience interaction.

This year's Family Concert is all about "What's in an Orchestra, Anyway?" Maestro Victoria Gau will take the audience on a musical tour of the orchestra, featuring works by Shostakovich, Copland, Britten, Bernstein, and more.

Tickets for Children 16 and under are FREE for all Capital City Symphony concerts!

This concert is recommended for children ages 3 and up (or able to sit through an hour-long program).

LOCAL FIFTH-GRADER MAKES HER PROFESSIONAL DEBUT

Rowyn Peel, a 5th-grader at Sligo Creek Elementary School in Silver Spring, made her professional stage debut this past weekend as Amaryllis in the Washington Savoyards' production of "The Music Man."

Rowyn has studied singing, dance, drama, and piano since 1st grade. Her first solo was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for her kindergarten class show. She studied with Theatretrain in Cambridge, England, with performances in Cambridge and at the Drury Lane theater in London. Here in Maryland, Rowyn has performed in "The Christmas Revels" with Washington Revels for the past three years, and she is a member of the 2009 Montgomery County Elementary Honors Chorus. Schmidt, playing Professor Harold Hill, meets Broadway star and Washington Savoyards' favorite, Sandy Bainum, as Marian Paroo—"Marian the Librarian," in this time-loved comedy about the man from "Gary, Indiana" who brings "Trouble" to River City.

DC Theatre Scene calls the Washington Savoyards’ production of The Music Man "utterly charming" and "a delightful piece of Americana."

Rowyn Peel and Sandy Bainum are featured in "Winter Musical Scene Stealing Moments" on DC Theatre Scene.

Preceded by the popular Instrument Petting Zoo, 1/2 hour before each performance time.

Gottaswing.com presents a swing dance with the SingCo Rhythm Orchestra. SRO bandleader Doug Bowles is Rudy Vallee, Cab Calloway, Fred Astaire and Harry Connick, Jr., all rolled into one! His vast experience in front of audiences, coupled with a naturally bubbly, zany personality and excellent musicianship combine to make him one of the best front men you’ll ever find. SRO plays all the standard greats of the Big Band Swing Era, with a style that will convince you that you’ve stepped into another decade.

Beginner swing lesson with Tom & Debra, 8 - 9 pm; dancing from 9pm - midnight.
