In a program called "Meet the Composer", our young audience will have the chance to learn how music is created - and to help!

We are excited to present the next installment in our series of Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions with Becky Linafelt as part of the WE ARE TAKOMA Series.

Peanut Butter & Jam Sessions are designed for children ages 1 1/2 to 7 and their accompanying grown-ups. These informal concerts encourage young children to become active and enthusiastic listeners through music, movement, and games.

In this session, we will explore FEELINGS. For the young child, navigating and understanding feelings can be quite a complicated task! Our feelings range from great excitement and joy to sadness and anger and all that’s in between.

Join a String Quintet from the Takoma Ensemble and Kindermusik educator, Becky Linafelt, on a musical journey through the varied landscape of FEELINGS.

Stay for snacks after the performance!

A $10 per child donation is suggested.

CELLIST BRANNON CHO, now 17, started his cello studies at the age of 7 with Marnie Kaller in NJ. At an early age, he won First Prize in several competitions including the Grand Prize in the New Jersey American String Teachers Association (ASTA) competition. After being accepted into the Meadowmount School of Music at age 10, he continued his studies there for 5 summers with a Merit scholarship.

Brannon made his debut with the Colonial Symphony in 2008 and recently performed the Dvorak Cello Concerto with the Richardson Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Anshel Brusilow. In 2010, Brannon was a Runner-up in From the Top’s “Big Break” contest, and subsequently performed in Carnegie Hall and on From the Top’s radio show. He was the First Prize winner of the 2011 Lennox International String Competition, Grand Prize winner of the 2011 ASTA National Competition, 2nd Prize winner at Stulberg competition 2012 and the First Prize winner at Johansen International Competition. On January, 2012, Brannon gave a master class and performed as a guest artist in the Eastern Washington University's "Cellobration." Brannon is currently a student of Hans Jørgen Jensen.

Your child (or grandchild) could be our next maestro! Put your child on the conductor's podium at a Capital City Symphony Concert and you may just unlock hidden talents or career goals. He or she will conduct one piece at the annual Family Concert on November 18, 2012.

The Capital City Symphony, in residence at the Atlas Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., auctions off "Junior Guest Conductor" spots each year for their popular Family Concert in November. Due to Hurricane Sandy, bidding has been extended until Sunday, November 11. 

This is a major annual fundraiser for the Capital City Symphony. An important part of our mission is encouraging young audience members. Tickets for kids (16 and under) are FREE for all CCS main season concerts. The annual Family Concert is geared specifically to kids, especially the older pre-school and elementary school set. The Junior Guest Conductor auction helps us to continue to offer these benefits for our youngest audience members.

Each year Revels explores how the Winter Solstice has been celebrated in a different time or place. This year's show transports us back in time to novelist Thomas Hardy’s beloved Wessex and his fictional village of Mellstock in 19th-century England, with glorious music, rousing Morris dance, and the ever-popular audience sing-alongs!

SYMPHONY DANCE! Teen pianist to play with Capital City Symphony

Fall Concerts 2010

The Capital City Symphony fall concerts both hold special appeal for young people, as well as for adults. Every other year the Capital City Symphony features the winner of the Ylda Novik Memorial Piano Competition. This year's winner, 15-year-old pianist Sarah Barham, will be the guest artist for the October 17th concert, playing Liszt's Totentanz.

The October concert takes the idea of the dance through some twists, from Liszt's “Dance of Death” to the dead dancing on Bald Mountain, and concluding with Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, which Wagner referred to as “the apotheosis of the dance” because of its lively rhythms. The program will include Liszt, Totentanz, with pianist Sarah Barham; Mussorgsky/Rimsky-Korsakov, Night on Bald Mountain; and Beethoven, Symphony No. 7.

*Brad Foster from Amherst, MA, has been dancing and teaching English country, contras and squares, and morris and sword for over 40 years. He is well known for sharing the joy found in dance, and has taught throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe, including at Berea, Pinewoods, Mendocino, John C. Campbell Folk School and Augusta. He is Executive and Artistic Director of the Country Dance and Song Society, a post he has held for over 25 years. He is also a founder of the Bay Area Country Dance Society as well as co-founder of their Mendocino English and American dance weeks.

**The Serpentine Band features award-winning musicians – and local favorites – Andrea Hoag (fiddle), Leigh Pilzer (soprano sax, bass clarinet, cello) and Charlie Pilzer (bass, piano).

About the Artist:

Matthew Lipman is a gifted young violist who won first-prize viola and $10,000 at the 2009 Johansen International String Competition at the age of 17.

Now 18, Mr. Lipman is a scholarship recipient and member of the Music Institute of Chicago's Academy program for gifted pre-college musicians where he studies privately with MIC artist faculty member Roland Vamos. He started his music studies on the viola at age ten in a public school string program. He is a current recipient of a Career Grant from the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation and a 2007 Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award.

Fairyland will never be the same when beautiful Iolanthe marries a mortal and gives birth to a half-mortal, half-fairy son. In true Gilbert and Sullivan fashion, this comic light opera has everyone looking for love in all the wrong places.

Director Scott Kenison is creating a spectacular IOLANTHE with fine singing and dancing and great wit, set in the revolutionary year of 1968.

LOCAL FIFTH-GRADER MAKES HER PROFESSIONAL DEBUT

Rowyn Peel, a 5th-grader at Sligo Creek Elementary School in Silver Spring, made her professional stage debut this past weekend as Amaryllis in the Washington Savoyards' production of "The Music Man."

Rowyn has studied singing, dance, drama, and piano since 1st grade. Her first solo was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” for her kindergarten class show. She studied with Theatretrain in Cambridge, England, with performances in Cambridge and at the Drury Lane theater in London. Here in Maryland, Rowyn has performed in "The Christmas Revels" with Washington Revels for the past three years, and she is a member of the 2009 Montgomery County Elementary Honors Chorus. Rowyn currently studies jazz & tap at Imagination Stage, and piano with Gina Denny.
