Edge of the Universe Players 2 -- Entertaining Mr Sloane

The Edge of the Universe Players 2

present

Entertaining Mr Sloane

by Joe Orton
directed by Stephen Jarrett

Runs through Sunday, December 13, 2015
at the Writer's Center in Bethesda

Washington Post: ..."McGee’s mercurial Sloane is a winning gambit for this effective production of Joe Orton’s 1964 propriety-flouting play."

From among a multitude of very different scripts suggested by various directors, our Board chose this dark comedy from the 1960’s. It’s British playwright Joe Orton’s tale of people desperately searching for love, but weaving an outrageous tangle of lust, deceit, and violence in its place. We find it a commentary on morality and pragmatism in the worst sense. The story leads to questions about the structure of civilization. It’s also hilarious in many places.

The cast:
    Claire Schoonover as Kath
    Matthew Aldwin McGee as Sloane
    David Bryan Jackson* as Kemp
    Jim Jorgensen* as Ed

2015 Christmas Revels in Washington, D.C.

The Christmas Revels
A Medieval Celebration of the Winter Solstice

Revel with us and with our beloved king, a mysterious woodland queen, a pair of fools, and an unexpected guest. As the Winter Solstice calls us all together, meet us in a special place that straddles the majestic and the mythical realms. The townspeople gather with court and forest folk, new and old traditions find common ground, and a deeper community emerges. Join us and find the true heart and spirit of the holiday season as we bid goodbye to the old year and celebrate the birth of the new.

Amidst it all, enjoy rousing traditional music, powerful medieval songs, ethereal chants, seasonal carols, rollicking tunes on early instruments, familiar rounds, folk and courtly dances, a madcap “12 Days of Christmas,” the eerily hypnotic Abbots Bromley horn dance, a topsy-turvy “Lord of Misrule,” and an evocative mummers’ play.

Join our cast of over 100, ages 8 to 85, for this one-of-a-kind evening of seasonal celebration and merriment. Sing along and dance in the aisles with us, and join the over 10,000 people who make our Christmas Revels part of their holiday tradition each December!

Read about our Guest Artists, including Mark Jaster, Sabrina Mandell, Shane Odom, and Gwen Grastorf, along with Piffaro, the Renaissance Band and the Washington Revels Brass.

Washington Revels’ flagship production, The Christmas Revels, is a festive celebration of the Winter Solstice and the return of sun and light after the “shortest day.” Through music, dance and drama, it draws on traditions and rituals from many lands, peoples, and eras — medieval, Renaissance and Victorian English, French, Russian, Roma (Gypsy), African-American, Scandinavian, American Appalachian, Native American, Renaissance Italian, Québécois, medieval Andalusian (Sephardic, Arabic and Spanish), southern Balkan (Bulgarian, Greek and Thracian Turkish), Irish, and more.
