Washington Revels: The 2016 CHRISTMAS REVELS

The Christmas Revels ~ A Nordic Celebration of the Winter Solstice in Music, Dance & Drama

Join us on a journey into the wonders of Nordic winter traditions! As our families from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden gather to celebrate the season, let the haunting melodies, breathtaking dance, mysterious folk legends, and joyful carols get you into the holiday spirit!

Discover mythic drama from Finland’s epic Kalevala. As the moon lights the snow, watch the spirited Icelandic Vikivaki as a mysterious stag looks on. Celebrate the Swedish “bringing of the light” by Sankta Lucia with her crown of candles. Watch dancers twirl in the hypnotic Telespringar and thrill to the spectacular leaps of Norway’s Tom Løvli in the Halling dance. Be enchanted by the songs and dances of our children, and participate in their retelling of a beloved Norwegian fairy tale. Delight as we decorate our tree with traditional woven hearts and raise your voice with us in festive Danish toasts and carols.

Revel with our cast of over 100, ages 8–85, as we journey to the Northlands.

Washington Revels’ flagship production, The Christmas Revels, is an annual festive celebration of the Winter Solstice and the return of sun and light after the “shortest day.” Through music, dance and drama, it draws on traditions and rituals from many lands, peoples, and eras — medieval, Renaissance and Victorian English, French, Russian, Roma (Gypsy), African-American, Nordic, American Appalachian, Native American, Renaissance Italian, Québécois, medieval Andalusian (Sephardic, Arabic and Spanish), southern Balkan (Bulgarian, Greek and Thracian Turkish), Irish, and more.

Three for a Song present "Cocktails for Three: A Collection of intoxicating melodies of the 1920s and 30s"

Three For a Song
present
"Cocktails for Three: A Collection of Intoxicating Melodies of the 1920 and 30s

Saturday, January 16, 2016 at 7:30pm

Germano's Piattini and Cabaret
300 S High St, Baltimore, Maryland 21202

Just back from an appearance at The National Archives and exciting feature on BBC Worldwide, THREE FOR A SONG brings a show of boozy, bold, and beautiful melodies of the 20s and 30s guaranteed to “Go to your head, like a "sip of burgandy brew."

Pianist extraordinaire, Alex Hassan, recreates the styles of the golden age of 1920s/30s Tin Pan Alley; sublime, acclaimed East Coast based singers Doug Bowles and Iyona Blake are versatile performers who bring the songs of the Era to life with humor and heart.

An "outstandingly talented" trio, according to Michael Feinstein, they have performed to standing ovations at venues such as the Kennedy Center Jazz Club and the Library of Congress. The trio presents a delightful evening of recently discovered, never performed, breathtaking melodies from stage and film of the 1930's; with clever lyrics, bouncy rhythms, and hot tempos. Woven between the songs, you'll hear hilarious, heartwarming and surprising anecdotes about the songs and songwriters, with listeners left to wonder how on earth these melodies didn't become standards! With over 45,000 pieces of sheet music in his repertoire, Hassan and his colleagues invite you to join them as they present their new cabaret, “Cocktails for Three: A Collection of Intoxicating Melodies of the 20s and 30s”
